Menu Planning Mondays

I've had a head cold slash flu thing this week and it's been Brians week of nights so our meal plan has been very basic and not exactly healthy.

Mon ~ Meat pies
Tues ~ Easy
Wed ~ Tuna Mornay
Thurs ~ Yumbos
Fri ~ Out for snitzel night at the pub
Sat ~ Homemade vegie full sausage rolls
Sun ~ Ham and veg soup using the ham bone from christmas

I had a big craving for chocolate cake during the week. I finally baked one on the weekend and it's certainly hitting the spot.

My taste buds seem to have gone on holiday this week with this cold/flu thing so I'm really craving heavily flavoured things. I even been wanting a packet of potato chips because they are so heavily salted that I think I might be able to actually taste them!
Next weeks menu plan will be much healthier and many of the recipes are using the lovely slow cooker.

10 ways to reduce your costs RIGHT NOW!

I know many of us are reeling from Tuesdays budget and many will be worrying about how they are going to stretch an already tight budget.
Many will just be starting to think about being frugal. I know when I first started it was a little confusing on where I should start.
So below are just 10 simple ways that you can start to reduce your costs of living right now, without having to spend anything!

Menu Plan ~ By planning your meals you'll be less inclined to stop by the supermarket to grab something for dinner and coming out with a massive bag of goods that you didn't really need. You can also plan to make the most of leftovers.

Cooking once, eat twice ~ You can either turn a roast pork into a casserole, sweet and sour or even simple fried rice a night or two after the main meal. Or cook up a double batch of your favourite casserole or bolognaise sauce and freeze for later. You'll use about the same amount of electricity to cook double the amount as you would for a single batch and you'll have an easy meal in the freezer for busy nights.

Reduce your meat portions ~ We love our meat and this is one aspect that we really struggle with. Meat is very important in our diets but many of us do eat a little too much. Make sure your proteins are good quality and eat less.

Greywater ~ reuse your greywater from doing the dishes, laundry and baths on your lawns and garden.

Large Loads ~ Waiting until you have a full load of laundry will save you  water, detergent and powder in the long run.

Reduce disposables ~ sew some 'not towels' from old bedsheets to use instead of paper towel for wiping up messes.

Watch your fill ~ Don't fill the whole kettle for one cuppa, only fill the kettle with as much water as you need each time. Or fill it completely and boil, the store in a thermos and make your cuppas from that for the day.

Shut up shop ~ Once the sun starts to go down, shut your doors, windows and window coverings to keep the warmth in the house.

Layer up ~ Reduce your heating bill by adding extra layers of clothing and blankets rather than turning on the heating

Walk ~ When the weather is fine walks to the shops for small trips. Walk to school or work. Even if you live too far to walk the whole distance, drive part way then walk the rest. It's good for you, your daily exercise and Vit D, but you will save fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle.

These are just a few ways that you can start to reduce your costs. There are many more, but starting here will give you a great basis to move on with.

Now that the cooler weather is here my boys have been looking for more warmer desserts. Over summer they pretty much had an ice cream in a cone each night. Now it's time for some rib sticking yummy desserts again.

Tucker Tuesday: Recipe ~ Homemade French Onion Soup Mix

I don't know about you, but I find having a packet of French Onion Soup mix in the pantry so handy. Unfortunately they're full of nasty stuff so I thought I'd have a go at making my own.

I ended up combining a few different recipes I found on the net and it's turned out really nice. I've made a few of our favourite dishes with it and it's been given the thumbs up by everyone.

Homemade French Onion Soup Mix
2/3C dried onion flakes
3t dried parsley flakes
2t onion powder (I ground up some dried onion flakes in my mortar and pestle)
2t ground tumeric
1t celery salt
1t sea salt
1t sugar
1/2t ground black pepper
3/4C beef stock powder

Mix ingredients all together and pop in an air tight jar. I used a jam jar. Was the perfect size. As you can see I've been using this batch.
Depending on where you buy your onion flakes you may wish the break them up a little. I did, just used the mortar and pestle.
Now depending on which brand of beef stock powder you use will depend on how 'numbers' free your mix will be, so read the back of your packets.
I use about 3 heaped dessertspoons to replace a packet. Each batch will get you at least 4 serves.

Tues ~ Hearty French Onion Chicken Casserole
Wed ~ Homemade Beef and veg soup with Homemade bread
Thurs ~ Curried Savoury Mince and Mash
Fri ~ Easy dinner
Sat ~ Lasagna, Chippie spuds and roast pumpkin
Sun ~ Roast Chicken and veg

~ I have been experimenting with some homemade packet mixes this week, recipes to come once they are perfected.
~ I also turned my Rich Butter Cake into a marble cake for MIL's birthday yesterday.
